I rarely make appetizers or finger food, except around the holidays.  Between family celebrations, church events, and holiday parties, we end up going to a lot of events that require bringing an appetizer or finger food.

This is a recipe that my Grandma and Mom came up with, that I often bring to family events or parties.  It’s a new take on the classic cheese ball.  By the end of the night there is rarely any left to take home.

The recipe measurements are not exact because I always make this by eye-balling the amounts and tasting it.  I will do my best, but I would recommend tasting the mixture before you serve it, in case you need to make adjustments.  If the cream cheese is too bland add some more ketchup and garlic, if it’s too salty add more ketchup.

Grammy Joy’s Cheese Ball

1   8 oz. package of cream cheese
4 T  ketchup
2 T  worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp.  garlic salt
1/4 tsp.  onion powder
1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese (grated)
1.5 cups of chopped walnuts or pecans

Blend cream cheese in a mixer until smooth.  Add ketchup, worcestershire sauce, garlic, and onion.  Mix until ingredients are incorporated.  Add cheese and blend for just a few seconds.

Cover and place mixture into the frig for 15 to 20 minutes to let it set up.  You can make the mixture 24 hours in advance just wait to roll it in the nuts.

To form the ball, moisten your hands and pat the cream cheese into a round shape.  Chop the nuts on a cutting board and roll the cheese ball in the nuts.  Toasting the nuts before you chop them really gives a nice added flavor to the cheese ball, but it’s not essential.

Plate and serve with your favorite assortment of crackers.  Wheat Thins and Chicken in a Biscuit are my familie’s favorites.

If you have any favorite holiday appetizer recipes I would love to hear them.  I’m always anxious to add to my recipe box.

Neil and I throw a huge Christmas party every year, and I make a huge assortment of appetizers.  The crowd favorite is Pork and Mango Skewers.  I don’t have the recipe with me right now – but look it up online – it’s great!  : )
